Applique Shoulder Bags

These beautiful bags have appliqued shapes on the front, the back and even the straps. There are two base colors: Blue and Rust (a brownish-orange color). The appliqued patterns are mainly white. The bag looks elaborate and modern, yet it retains its handmade nature.

These are Fair Trade bags made by artisans in India. The artisans were compensated fairly for their work, and have been given development help as partners of Handmade Expressions.

This stylish bag has a broad should strap the opening creats a “V”. It is made from recycled embroidered patches that were collected from the textile industry. Each bag has a unifying red yarn but the recycled fabrics make each bag slightly different. This versatile and functional bag even has a small pouch at the shoulder strap for a mobile phone. The inside is lined with cloth and contains zippered pockets. The bag is also adorned with beautiful mirror work and miniature rattle bells that add great value to an already elaborate bag.

The bag is made by an artisan cooperative in Northern India, in a region that has been affected by severe drought. This art provides sustainable employment in a land with little farming opportunity. Your purchase provides very important income used to feed to many families and educate numerous children.

Express yourself Jute bags

These messenger-style bags have inspirational messages printed on the front flap. There are three different messages on three different colors:

1) Blue Expressions Bag – “I AM FAIR TRADE
2) Brown Expressions Bag – “BE yourself”
3) Green Expressions Bag – “Recycle, reuse, reduce”

Each bag is made following Fair Trade practices. This means the artisans were compensated fairly for their work. At the same time, they are made jute, which is a sustainable material.

This indigenous bag is made by hand weaving jute and cotton. Colorful Jute threads give it a beautiful rustic texture. The inside of the bag is lined with thick canvas fabric and has two pockets (one zipped and one unzipped).

Kashida Messenger Bags

These messenger bags are made following the traditional “Kashida” art of weaving on pit looms. The whole process is made by hand in desert villages of north west India. The bags come in 2 colors: black and red.

This bag is made from khadi, a handwoven fabric that is part of a development project started by Mahatma Ghandi. It has multiple pockets inside and outside. Comes with a changing pad. It has an embroidered bird design in front.

Income generated by this bag helps artisans lead a dignified lifestyle. It also helps fund development projects that aim to help artisans break the poverty cycle.

Pakko Messenger Bag

The bag is made by combining various fabric patches together. All the patches are sewn to another base fabric by small running stitches, locally termed as “Pakko”. The entire fabric is then neatly sown into a bag and lined by a fine cotton fabric. A small flap pocket is given in the front to carry small items.

The product is made by artisans in the north western India – a land of little agricultural opportunity. Income generated by this bag helps them rise above poverty and achieve a sustainable livelihood.

Eco friendly, reusable shopping bag is a good alternative to plastic or paper bags. A stylish way to carry your various daily items and accessories. The ancient Indian script printed on the fabric adds on to the rustic appeal. “OM” and other motifs are printed on a contrasting color stripe at the top.

Tree of Life Applique Bag

These are messenger bags with symbolic, hand appliquéd motifs on the front flap. This particular series is comprised of the Tree of Life. It is a quilted bag with a big pocket inside, made by artisans in India. They use locally grown, unbleached and un-dyed cotton, making this bag environmentally friendly and giving it a rustic appeal.

The series is made by an all-female cooperative in the draught-affected Marwar region of West Rajasthan, India. This cooperative is made of 272 women actively practicing this art. The artisans are distributed over the region in various villages. Women from far villages come once a week to the cooperative office, submit their products and collect more raw materials to take back to their homes and work on them. Profits from this art help in the overall development of the group. This region now has medical centers providing basic health services, electricity produced from solar energy, evening schools for kids and vocational colleges for women. Thank you for your support!

This is a classic and simple messenger bag. The bag, decorated with a striped pattern, and has a front flap and a large pocket inside.

This is a clear example of how a functional, good quality bag can also be sustainable. It is made following a fair trade philosophy and sustainable business practices. A good percentage of the income generated by the bag goes back into the development of the producers’ communities.

Recycled Tape Folding Bag

These are very special products, made from recycled plastic and music tapes. They are lined with cloth inside. Comes as an assortment of colors. The bag itself can be folded into a small, zipped container, which is also the base of the bag when unfolded. Therefore, it’s easy to carry in your purse to the grocery store, where it can be unfolded and used as a shopping bag.

These are made in a school that teaches vocational skills to children with disabilities. The project focuses on bringing out the creative skills in these special artists and at the same time preparing them to become financially self-sufficient and self-employed.

Recycled Video Tape Totes

These tote bags are made from recycled video tapes and cotton yarn. They come in two colors: green and rust.

The bags are handcrafted by young, underprivileged adults with special needs. They belong to an organization that makes sure they get the vocational education needed to survive in the world. Since many of the artisans have motor, cognitive, behavioral, linguistic and other associative problems, the organization must make sure they are also educated in basic life skills.

These stoles are woven with fine wool threads. The variation in the weave gives the stole a rich texture. It is then tie-dyed using beautiful colors: green or red.
